How to Make a Troy-Bilt Lawnmower Go Faster

... Disabling your Troy-Bilt\’s governor will allow for faster lawn cutting.

Troy-Bilt lawnmowers possess Briggs & Stratton engines that feature a governor that is used to keep the top speed of the lawnmower down to a manageable rate for the safety of the driver and any nearby individuals. The Troy-Bilt's governor can be disabled in order to eliminate that artificial limit on speed and make the lawnmower go faster. Fortunately, taking your mower into a shop or a professional is not necessary in order to access and adjust the governor. You can make your Troy-Bilt lawnmower go faster regardless of your knowledge of small engines.

Step 1

Turn off your Troy-Bilt lawnmower. Open the front engine hood over the engine, if applicable. Locate the flywheel. This is a large, circular part that is covered by an iron "shroud." This shroud or cover features a number of bolts. Remove each bolt with a socket wrench.

Step 2

Pull off the Troy-Bilt lawnmower's flywheel shroud to expose the flywheel and the parts underneath.

Step 3

Find the lawnmower's magneto. The magneto sits on one side of the flywheel beneath the flywheel cover. A plastic flap is attached to this magneto. This flap is the Troy-Bilt lawnmower governor's flap. Take out the bolt holding the flap in place using the socket wrench.

Step 4

Find the Troy-Bilt lawnmower's carburetor. The distinctive bowl of the carburetor can be found along the left side of the Briggs & Stratton engine. There is an eyelet on this carburetor that a rod from the governor is connected to. Pull the rod away from the carburetor's eyelet. This will disable the governor and increase your Troy-Bilt lawnmower's speed.

Disabling your governor will void your engine's warranty, so bear this in mind when operating on your machine.
